Case Study: Collective Legacy Project

Roles

  • Digital Producer
  • Video Director & Editor
  • Content Strategist & Manager

Overview

I led the development of a fully digital website designed to preserve and share the life stories of older generations. The goal was to create an immersive experience that humanizes the past and passes valuable life lessons to younger generations, ensuring the wisdom and experiences of elders live on in a meaningful and accessible way.

Challenge

With the rapid digitalization of media, much of the wisdom held by older generations risks being lost. Traditional forms of storytelling—family gatherings, photo albums, and oral histories—are becoming less common, especially as younger people increasingly engage with digital content. The challenge was to bridge this gap by creating a digital platform that could faithfully capture the essence of personal stories and present them in a way that resonates with modern audiences.

Key challenges included:

  1. Capturing Authentic Voices: Ensuring that each story retained its authenticity while being formatted for a digital experience.
  2. User-Friendly Design for Older Generations: The website had to be simple enough for older individuals, who might not be tech-savvy, to enjoy with their families.
  3. Engaging Younger Generations: The content needed to be compelling enough to engage younger users who are used to fast-paced, digital-first experiences.
  4. Preservation of Multimedia Content: Incorporating various types of media such as text, audio, video, and images in a way that maintains the emotional impact of each story.

Solution

I approached the project with a vision of creating a digital archive that was as human as it was technical. The process involved several key steps:

  1. Filmed Interviews: I began by interviewing older participants with my collaborators. These interviews would serve as the website and social media content for CLP.
  2. Designing for Simplicity and Accessibility: Given that older generations would be the primary content providers and a large portion of the consumers, I ensured that the website’s design was intuitive and straightforward. The font size and contrast were optimized for better readability, and the site was built to be mobile-friendly to accommodate different levels of internet access and technical proficiency.
  3. Human-Centered Storytelling Approach: We included the personal life stories in the form of profile pages—including text, video, and photography. I worked with a content production team to develop a standardized yet flexible framework that allowed stories to flow naturally.
  4. We Leveraged Length: One of the most innovative aspects of the project was the use of longer form content. Many interviews lasted well over 60 minutes, which we chose to keep so that people could watch and listen to longer, fuller stories in multiple sessions. We also found the oral aspect of the interviews to be key—as many viewers would primarily listen to the stories in the background of doing household or work tasks. Checking back in to the visual experience when hooked with a compelling anecdote. This feature created a visual and emotional connection between users and the global community of storytellers.

Results

  • Dependable Engagement: The website attracted a wide demographic, from seniors wanting to share their experiences to younger individuals eager to learn about the past. Once visitors found the site, we saw high rates of return viewers.
  • Emotional Connection: Through the inclusion of multimedia elements, the stories were not just heard but felt. Contributors shared that the platform allowed them to express themselves in ways they hadn’t thought possible, and younger users said it gave them a deeper understanding of their elders’ lives.
  • Community Building: The project succeeded in creating a digital community where generations could connect over shared experiences and life lessons. Many users remarked on how they found inspiration in stories that mirrored their own struggles and triumphs.
  • Preserving History: By creating a digital archive, we ensured that these life lessons and stories would be preserved for future generations. The platform has since expanded, with contributors from different countries and cultures sharing their stories.

Conclusion

This project demonstrated the power of technology to not only preserve the past but to make it come alive for future generations. Through thoughtful design and a human-centered approach, we created a space where older generations could share their stories and life lessons, while younger users found inspiration and guidance in those narratives. By blending digital tools with age-old storytelling traditions, we bridged the generational gap in a meaningful, lasting way.
